Photographer Feature: Salma Kilaouy

What or who made you want to be a photographer?

I became interested in Photography when I was in college. It started off as a hobby. I started taking pictures at school events. Since I was part of the MSA (Muslim student Association) I sort of became the unofficial MSA photographer. My wanting to be a photographer came out of necessity. Photography is an extremely expensive hobby and I decided I wanted to make money off taking photos to fund my hobby.

How long have you been on your photo journey?

I guess I was sort of on this journey since 2012 when I picked up photography. I started by only taking photos at school events to eventually getting hired by TK Photographers in 2015.

What has been your biggest struggle and greatest accomplishment as a photographer?

I believe I'm still struggling as a photographer. I'm in between working for a company and trying to figure if I should start my own business. My greatest accomplishment is being self taught. I didn't go to school for photography. I pretty much learned through endless youtube tutorials and online articles, practicing on my own and taking any tips I could from fellow photographers.

Do you have a specific style you like to shoot?

Yes, I would say so. My style is very bright, contrasty. Colors really catch my eyes so I try to incorporate that in my photos. I use presets that the company I work for has provided for me and I would describe it as very contrasty.

Biggest pet peeve when it comes to the photography industry?

I don't think I'm qualified enough to speak on behalf of the photography industry. Many do complain that the industry is saturated. I think it's great that many want to become photographers. What bothers me is seeing many claim to be photographers and charge for sessions when they don't understand the basics on how exposure works or have the basic equipment. We all start from somewhere but photography takes a lot more then simply owning a DSLR.

Name 3 things that are on your photo bucket-list?

I have always wanted to photograph the Northern Lights, the milky way or a beautiful waterfall in the middle of a forest.

Your favorite photo app to use?

Instagram no doubt.

What camera and lens do you shoot on?

I shoot with a canon 5d mark iii with a 24-70mm 2.8. I also recently acquired a fuji xt2 with a kit lens of 18-50 2.8.

f you could photograph any place in the world, where would you pick?

Oh man that's an unfair question. But I guess I would have to say Iceland. Apparently the landscape there is amazing.

Do you have any photo goals for this year?

I started a sort of travel/photography blog and my goal is to update it more. I have so much content thats never been posted anywhere so I'd like to post more on the blog.

In case you're curios this is the blog -
