Get Your Grow On!

Before you start mustering up the confidence to start connecting with brands, you first need to allow yourself to just grow! Your audience is going to be the key to unlocking some amazing brand partnerships.

Let’s first mention the dreaded numbers question. Yes, it gives your blog more leverage if you've cultivated a big audience. However, hope is not lost if you're still a small blogger in a massive ocean. The secret is Engagement and brands are taking notice. If you can prove to a brand that your audience (though small) is engaged and rallying behind every post. This means active followers are liking posts on social media and your blog! And most importantly, commenting. This shows the brand you have an audience that is paying attention to you, and brands find this very appealing and one of the main reasons they hop on board to collaborate.

So you're probably thinking, great! How do I grow? It's actually so simple. You get social! That's the secret to social media! It's in the name. At first, when I was told this piece of advice I did the obvious eye roll. But if you do a little research (don’t worry girl, I did that for you!) you will see that Instagram loves active users. This means Instagram is more likely to show people your account if you're consistently posting, liking, commenting, responding, implementing hashtags, and using their special features such as Instagram stories and TV. If you're just sitting back and waiting for the growth to come to you, you will be waiting for a long time. With the new algorithm as of 2018, you're going to have to put in the work if you want your account to grow and traffic to be directed to your blog organically. Soon enough, you will start to see your engagement rise, and you can start working with brands. So for right now, if you're just starting out, make sure to allow yourself some time to grow grow grow!

Some simple tips:

  • Hashtags are going to be your best friend! Instagram allows 30 of them per post. So do yourself a favor and use them ALL but use them wisely. Hashtags can bring vast amounts of engagement to your account. Think about your target market and cultivate hashtags that relate to your post and niche.   • Keep your social media content relevant to your blog! You want brands and potential followers / readers to go on your page and quickly recognize your niche. If you’re a fashion blogger....well, we should be able to know that right away.

  • Post consistently! At least once or twice a day. You want to remain visible within Instagram’s tricky algorithm. I try to photograph in batches, which means I will spend a day shooting and space out content for the month to make life a little easier.

  • Quality is key! Instagram is a visual platform filled with millions of users. In order to catch people’s eye, you must be posting quality content. I don’t mean you have to run out and buy yourself a $3,000 dollar DSLR camera, but you have to understand lighting and what makes or breaks a good photo (don’t worry! I will be giving you all my photo secrets!) But let's think about this...if I am scrolling through the explore page, I am more likely to wanna follow accounts that have beautiful lighting and great quality photos. I’ve seen some incredible bloggers shoot everything on their iPhone using impeccable lighting. No one wants to see a dark, blurry and completely grainy photo!
