Why did you start a blog?
I actually started my blog in 2012 as an online "diary" to keep me accountable on my journey to living healthier. I was working at a brewery at that time, was overweight, was drinking WAY too much, and I remember I needed a way to track my workouts and keep myself motivated. It was originally on Tumblr, and was called "The Road To A Healthy Life". It followed me from my first mile runs, through half marathons, trail runs, and marathons. When I took the leap into teaching and saw where this "road" lead me, I decided to rebrand. After my wedding in 2017, I relaunched my blog as "The Sweat Life Boston".
What does your blog cover?
It covers everything and anything. While there is a heavy wellness hand, I make sure to cover all the things that make us sweat - workouts, life, careers & family.
What encouragement would you give new bloggers/those who are interested in starting?
Just start. Not every blog is going to be perfect, and that's ok. You have your own voice, and that's your super power. Don't waste your super power trying to imitate someone else. Trust your voice, and you'll always know what to do.
What struggles do you encounter?
Being consistent. I have been leaning a lot more on my Instagram lately than my blog. When I know I have longer than an Instagram caption, then I typically head to my blog. Also, it's a struggle to not play the compare game and to really trust your gut!
Favorite/least favorite part of blogging?
My favorite part about blogging has got to be the ability to write on my own terms. I went to school for journalism, and I currently work full time as a publications editor for a tech company. Being able to blog allows me to have a creative outlet for my writing - so I never loose my love of it! Least favorite? The technical aspect of running and maintaining a website!
How did you come up with your name?
I had a huge brainstorming session with a couple of friends - I wanted to have enough flexibility to blog about all the things that I loved. And then it all came back to sweat. Good workout? You're sweating. Stressful time? You're sweating. Want to negotiate for a higher salary? Definitely sweating. Buying a House? You are sweating physically, mentally AND emotionally when you spend 3 hours signing papers. I also wanted it to reflect the geographic area that I'm living in.
How long have you been blogging?
Since 2012! What has been your greatest achievement in this industry? Personal or professional I think personally, I've been able to grow into the person I am. Recently I've reflected back and wondered how my life would be now if I didn't start "The Road To A Healthy Life" and start my own health and fitness journey!
Who are some bloggers/influencers or creators in general that inspire you?
Ah this is SO hard! I'm continuously inspired by Heather White, founder of Trill Fit, Claire Wasserman, founder of Ladies Get Paid, Sami Migliozze, founder of The Cure Studios, and Jenny Ravikumar, founder of Barefoot Yoga Shala. These creators and innovators not only speak their truth, they live it too.
What do you hope you’ll get out of being a Bloggers Live Boston member?
I hope to get to connect and meet other amazing creators and people who love to use their voices to make the world a better place!
